Microchip application
Currently in Portugal, it is mandatory by law to place microchips on all dogs, cats and ferrets, as well as the respective registration the animal a its owner data in SIAC (Companion Animal Information System), which is an exclusive veterinary procedure. The microchip is a small sterile device, similar in size to a grain of rice, that is implanted under the skin, on the left side of the neck.
Other species, such as snakes or birds, also benefit from microchip identification, whose placement must also be done only by a veterinarian, for later registration in CITES/ICNF (Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests).
